Yarn Shop Day! Come see us! Saturday 2nd May!

Following the success of last year’s event, Fabrications is pleased to announce that we will be participating in the national ‘Love Your Yarn Shop’ campaign, initiated by Let's Knit Magazine which aims to raise the profile of the value that bricks and mortar yarn stores bring to the local community. Part of the campaign includes ‘Yarn Shop Day’ taking place on Saturday 2^nd May.

On ‘Yarn Shop Day’, Fabrications will be hosting a ‘Close-Knit Community Knit-Tea Party’ open to all ages (from 7+) and all levels of crafter from 1:30-5:30pm. 

Flowers, leaves, and garlands will make up the creations for the day, which can be knitted or crocheted in detail with small needles and hooks or large on their unique MACRO knitting needles and French knitting wheels. All of the items created will be added to a flourishing knitted trellis installation on Fabrications shop front, so that everyone can admire them! 

Special Goody Bags are set to be available for the first 25 customers of the day to start off the event. Everything will be provided, from the materials to the food, with Fabrications lovely teachers on hand to help, so all you need to bring is you! Everyone is welcome to this free event, but space is limited, so be sure to book your spot NOW!. 

Participating in this exciting day is just the beginning of the celebration to mark Fabrications 15th birthday! 

Yarn Shop Day

Fabrications is proud to be a part of the 'Love your yarn shop' campaign. Initiated by Let's Knit and their sister magazine 'Let's get Crafting' the aim of the National campaign is to raise the profile of  bricks and mortar yarn stores, encouraging Crafter's to support their local yarn store and celebrate the value we offer beyond just selling wool! including personalised advice, ideas, expert recommendations, classes, socials, SOS (save our stitches!) and much more!

The campaign culminates with 'Yarn Shop Day' on Saturday 3rd May, when customers and local yarn stores all around the UK will join forces to spin a yarn and share their yarny love. Different shops will be hosting free workshops, promotions and inviting in knitting & crochet 'Ambassadors'.

How will Fabrications be celebrating Yarn Shop Day?

We will have an open house, offering free taster workshops in MACRO knitting, continental knitting and projects advice / SOS in our beautiful and welcoming Imaginerium craftspace. In conjunction with Stylecraft we are also offering Goody Bags - cotton bags containing yarns, haberdashery, knitting patterns to the first 40 Yarn Shop Day customers! Look out for our special window display too, which is going to spill out into the street!

Which Ambassadors will be with us on the day?

- Fabrications own Barley Massey will be sharing tips on MACRO knitting and making your own upcycled yarns
- Jill Bulgan, a regular adviser at our fortnightly Craft Club and teaches the 'progressing your knitting skills' classes will be available to offer some help with your projects and knitting dilemmas.
- Luise Roberts, author of numerous knitting and crochet books including 'First Knits' published by Collins & Brown (and on sale in our shop!) who informs me she loves to demo continental knitting as her party trick and is generously providing a free pattern of her Marilyn Monroe finger puppet for the goody bags!

Do I need to book?

Although it is free and drop in style, we'd be grateful if you could book in so we can accommodate you and ensure we have brewed enough tea and cake and prepared enough materials (for example you can make a MACRO knitted scarf) You can do this HERE!

Knitters go wild in Hackney!

Our town hall square has been transformed overnight! On Saturday, I got the tip off in the shop that 'the woolly transformation' or 'yarn storm' would take place late on Sunday night. On Monday morning reporter Massey was at the scene! And what a beautiful and colourful scene it is! All 12 trees in Hackney's town hall square have been lovingly wrapped in knitted and crocheted patchwork covers, reminiscent of Freddie Robins tree cosies. I'm sure the trees are really happy with their new warm jackets! As are the passers by that I saw inspecting the trees, looking and smiling!

Firm favorites are back but we are also very excited about introducing some different sessions and also a couple of new teachers to the fold! I've got my very own Tweet Towel!!

Last week I received this embroidered personalised tea towel or 'Tweet Towel', We are what we do's latest awareness enterprise, just in time for Christmas! By logging onto their website you can preserve your tweets for ever on a tea towel or send a message via a tea towel!! How great is that? washing up has just got really trendy!
As with all of We are what we do's projects all profits go into their charitable foundation. At the moment they are funding their 'digital inclusion project' with the aim of getting generations spending more time together, talking more and sharing more.

Our window has been Monstified!

Thanks to Ayda Anlagan for her amazing 'Monstify' creations and 'Monstify over' service we have a wicked spooky window display for Halloween. Please come down and have a look, these pictures don't give justice to the level of detail and imagination in her 'anatomical crochet with a twist'. All items are also for sale, so get them while they are fresh!!
I came across Ayda's work at this year's Designers Block. She was exhibiting with the Puff + Flock design collective. Through adding crocheted eyes, Ayda believes that anything can be monstified! Giving life and theatre to any inanimate object.

What's in the window?

Inspired by Claire Platt's posts while she was here, I'm continuing her theme of featuring our window displays. This month meet Clemence Joly, creator of our current display 'The Wool Butchery'

Clemence is a graphic designer and a very imaginative crocheter as well! She has re created a traditional french butcher's window using a variety of wool textures to capture different meats.

" Bonjour! Can I have a pound of saucisson sec and a couple of balls of wool, please"

My favorite has to be her pig's head, with an apple in it's mouth. Bien fait Clemence!

INTRODUCTION TO PATCHWORK QUILTING
Sunday 7 March, 2 - 4.30pm

Katherine May will be passing on traditional skills whilst encouraging recycling, exploring poetic ideas and emotional attachments. Participants are encouraged to experiment with colour and pattern, share stories and memories and work together as a group.

Textile techniques and skills: step by step making of hand pieces patchwork, sewn by hand, creating your quilt 'sandwich' and basting, rocking stitch, tying/knotting the quilt, creative recycling.
Materials: Collected pre loved and vintage fabrics will be supplied but participants are encouraged to bring items they have at home, from textiles which hold special memories to those simply no longer used. Fabrications will provide a basic sewing kit and instructions/inspirations sheet for participants to take home and carry on developing their skills.

KNIT LARGE
Sunday 14th March, 2 - 4.30pm

Whatever your ability chunky knitting is fun and fast!
Barley Massey will show you how to use the 'Wool-n-Boat' GIANT knitting needles (30mm) and GIANT french knitting wheels which you may have see in Fabrications! Barley will also show you how to create your own chunky yarns from salvaged wool and materials. There will be a pick n mix selection of chunky yarns to create an accessory during the class.

INTERMEDIATE PATCHWORK QUILTING
Sunday 21st March, 2 - 4.30pm

For this session Katherine May will focus on developing your understanding of piecing patchwork, with the aim of participants starting their own patchwork quilt project in the session. Using a variety of traditional shapes such as; triangles and hexagons, you will experiment with creating patchwork patterns. The workshop will concentrate on each participant developing their personal project ideas and you will leave with patchwork samples to develop designs at home or you will start your patchwork during the session.
As always please bring your favourite textiles that you may wish to work with, but pre-loved textiles and a kit with materials and information booklet will be provided.

BEGINNERS KNITTING
Sunday 28th March, 2 - 4.30pm

Learn the basics - how to cast on, Knit + Purl stitch, introducing a new colour and casting off. If you are an improver we can also show you combinations of knit + purl stitches to create different textures.

SPINNING + PEG LOOM WEAVING (Sunday 31st January)

Learn how to create your very own yarn from raw wool and a drop spindle. There will also be opportunity to have a go on a spinning wheel and try a bit of peg loom weaving
This special session will be run by Sue Russell

Sue Russell's aim is to pass on spinning, knitting, felting and weaving to people of all walks of life and abilities. She started to produce her GIANT knitting needles (available at Fabrications!) under the business name of 'Wool n Boat' over 10 years ago as a way of attracting younger people into knitting. She has subsequently run 100's of workshops and events including the 'Wool n Dance' at the Thames Festival in 2008.

Cross stitch and embroidery (Sunday 7th February)

Learn different decorative hand sewing stitches and create a beautiful stitched love token in time for Valentine's and give it to someone you care about in your life or yourself!
This session will take you from design to fruition. There will be a selection of inspirational motifs to work from or feel free to bring your own designs. Run by Fabrications' Barley Massey

FELTED XMAS STOCKINGS

Saturday 21st November, 10.30 - 4.30pm

A more advanced felt making session in which Abigail Thomas will show you how to create 3d shapes and a sandwich resist technique during which you will design and make your own felted Xmas stocking!

Abigail Thomas is a textile and book artist based in Hackney. She teaches felting to enthusiastic crafters and keen beginners, passing on basic techniques as well as inspirational and experimental ideas. Felt can be used to make wonderful useful items like slippers and tea cosies but also artistic and decorative pieces like beads, brooches and wall hangings.
The workshop will be run downstairs in the workshop, so max numbers for this session is 6 with a fixed fee of £45 per person (this includes colourful + natural 100% wool tops)

FELTED XMAS DECORATIONS
Saturday 28th November, 2 - 4.30pm
Have fun making some festive decorations whilst learning the brief history of felt, basic wet felting techniques and how to create 3d shapes and flat felt sheets. All materials will be provided as well as take home info sheets.This session will be led by Abigail Thomas. The session costs (£20. materials included. Max of 6)

HO! Ho! HO! Introducing a new teacher to Fabrications' fold - Aneeta Patel! (disguised by her knitted santa beard and hat!)

Aneeta Patel learned to knit when she was about 5 years old by her right-handed aunt. This means that she knits right-handed even though she is actually left-handed! It also means she has no barriers to teaching either left or right handed knitters. Aneeta created 'Knitting SOS' in 2006, a service for knitters in need of emergency advice! She subsequently wrote her thoughtful knitting book 'Knitty Gritty'. Hopefully she will bring along some copies of her book for sale after her session! (£20 / £15 conc)

FESTIVE PATCHWORK FUN
Sunday 20th December, 2 - 4.30pm
Katherine May will follow up her introduction class with some more advanced techniques in this session, whilst keeping in the festive spirit! There will be opportunity to design and make patchwork lavender bags. As with the last session materials will be provided but Katherine also encourages you to bring along your own pre loved or collected fabrics. (£20 / £15 conc)

Learn simple hand sewing techniques, which can be used for repairs, alterations and decoratively. I am open to ideas for the session - I can demonstrate different embroidery stitches, cross stitching + tapestry, applique, sequining, cut work.

This month we will be out and about at the following locations:

Saturday 5th July The Big Day Out in Whittington Park. Part of the Holloway Arts Festival

KNIT LARGE knit your own designer scarf using our GIANT knitting needles or BIG french knitting stools. There will be a heap of inspirational chunky yarns to work with.

RECYCLED ROSETTES make a rosette or patch from a pick n mix of reused and recycled fabrics, ribbons, buttons, sequins and more!

We will be in the Arts + Craft Zone (FREE)

Monday 7th July Royal Festival Hall, level 3, 5.30 - 7.30pm

Hyperbolic Crochet contibute to UK's first crochet corel reef which is currently on display at the Hayward Gallery and the Royal Festival Hall. Feel free to bring along your crochet hook and plastic bags! This spectacular collabrative project has been conceived by Margaret + Christene Wertheim of the Institute for figuring in Los Angeles. They've already initiated a number of hyperbolic crochet reefs in America. This is what they had to say about it " when most people see the Reef the first thing they do is laugh. It is woolly jumpers and higher geometry and girlie power and ecological awareness and mad texan housewives all at once"

Evening activities : 'Tea + Sympathy', 'The Hypothecary' and the 'Debating Society'
